Web Wiz Network Announcements

Data Centre Fibre Outage

22 September 2020, in Network, Data Centre

Our Virgin Media fibre circuits to our Bournemouth Data Centre have loss connectivity. This has been raised with our upstream provider who are investigating the issue.

Traffic that would have been carried over the circuits has automatically rerouted and there is no impact to service at this time, however service should be considered at risk due to the loss of resilience.

Update 19:10
Connectivity has been restored and the service has been returned to full resilience. No reason for the outage has been given as yet.

We will continue to monitor the fibre circuit and will update this page if the situation changes.

MySQL Database Upgrades - September 2020

16 September 2020, in Shared Hosting

As previously notified in June, we will be carrying out updates to our Shared Hosting MySQL 5.7 Database Servers to upgrade them to MySQL 8 during September 2020.

Start of work - At Risk period:
Start Date: 20th September 2020

End of work - At Risk period:
Risk End Date: 28th September 2020

Times work will be carried out:
Start Time: 05:00 GMT
End Time: 8:30 GMT

Service Impact:
Each MySQL Database Server will be off-line for between 10 and 20 minutes while it is updated to MySQL 8.

Customers may need to make changes to their databases and applications that connect to those databases to be compatible with MySQL 8.

The biggest change is how you authenticate with MySQL 8 Databases. We will be retaining the 'Standard' login for existing MySQL Users to avoid impacting customer services.

Reason:
MySQL 5.7 goes End Of Life (EOL) in October 2020 when security updates from Oracle will end.

Windows Server Updates - September 2020

10 September 2020, in Shared Hosting, Cloud Servers, Dedicated Servers

We will be carrying out Windows Updates to our Windows Shared Hosting Servers and to customers servers with Cloud and Managed Dedicated Servers during the times set out below.

Start of work - At Risk period:
Start Date: 11th September 2020

End of work - At Risk period:
Risk End Date: 11th September 2020

Times work will be carried out:
Start Time: 05:00
End Time: 8:30

Service Impact:
Servers will need to be rebooted after updates are applied.

Reason:
Microsoft releases Windows updates and patches on the second Tuesday of each month. These updates fix security vulnerabilities, performance and other issues.

After testing the latest updates we roll out Windows updates to all Web Wiz Managed Windows Servers.

Firmware Update to Hardware Nodes - August to September 2020

26 August 2020, in Shared Hosting, Cloud Servers

We will be updating the firmware on all our Hardware Nodes with our Data Centre that host services for Shared Hosting and Cloud Servers.

Start of work - At Risk period:
Start Date: 27th August 2020

End of work - At Risk period:
Risk End Date: 16th September 2020

Service Impact:
Servers will need to be restarted on redundant nodes while firmware updates are installed. There will be two reboots to servers causing outages of between 15 and 30 sounds for each of the two reboots.

Reason:
Vulnerabilities in Intel CPU's and Intel Management Engine require firmware updates to patch those vulnerabilities to ensure Shared Hosting Servers and Cloud Servers are secure.

UPS, AMF, ATS and Generator Load Testing - August 2020

21 August 2020, in Data Centre

As part of Web Wiz planned and preventative maintenance regime we will be carrying out load testing on the Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), Automatic Mains Failure (AMF), Automatic Transfer Switching (ATS) and Neutral Gas Powered Generator Systems at our Data Centre.

During the test period, the UPS systems will take the full load of the Data Hall while the Generator comes online and the AMF moves the facility to Generator Power.

The Generator will take the full load of the facility for a 20 minute period, once the test is completed power to our facility will return to our usual mix of Solar, Battery, and Utility Power.

Automatic Transfer Switching (ATS) will move rack power from "A" to "B" Power Feeds before returning each Rack to "A" Power Feeds.

At Risk period:
Start Date: 25th August 2020

Times work will be carried out:
Start Time: 08:15
End Time: 08:45

Service Impact:
No impact to services is expected.

Reason:
This routine maintenance is essential to ensure that the UPS, Generator and Automatic Switching systems work as intended and are able to provide power to our Data Centre in the unlikely event of a Power Outage.
